On June 23, 2016, OSHA’s new silica standard became effective. The construction industry has been given one year (or starting June 23, 2017) to implement this new standard.
Silica is considered to be “ubiquitous”, meaning you can find it just about anywhere in the world. Silica is in beach sand, concrete, dirt roads, mines, in glass, and marble counter tops.
Construction trades deal with silica in the widest variety of forms. It is estimated that about 84% of the employees in the United States who are exposed to silica (or silcon dioxide) work in construction. The biggest impact of OSHA’s new standard will therefore be with the construction trades.
This presentation will attempt to provide answers as to:
- what the new standard will involve,
- why there is a new standard,
- who are at the greatest health risks
- what to expect from an OSHA inspection focused on silica hazards
- ways to control employee exposures to silica
- what are some of the most common health effects of exposure to crystalline silica
Registrations are closed for this event.
NOTE: We do not have the manpower to make changes to your schedule or to track “wait lists” this year.
If a class is full, please go to the class and check in with the monitor at class time. The monitor will add folks on a first-come, first-served basis as space permits. Please, do not be late for your class (your spot will be filled) and please DON’T be a “No Show.” If your class is at AGC, ITD, Tates Rents, or Suez (previously United Water), please go to those locations to see if you can attend.
Also, please make sure you print your classes after you register. A confirmation email will be sent to the email address you provide during account registration. In order to check your class schedule, log in using your username and password and navigate to My Classes. If you cannot remember your classes, please come to the registration desk for your packet at the BSU Student Union Building the first day of the conference.
